This gem was hailed as Tucson's stone of the year in 2011! John F. Heusler was the first to discover this mineral and has proudly named it SONORAN DENDRITIC RHYOLITE.
He wrote an article on it in Lapidary Journal / Jewelry Artist Magazine in 2012 May/June issue. The piece made the cover he is very proud to say!
It is quite varied in its color and pattern. Even as we speak I see new patterns with each new delivery of new stock. The gems pictured on this page are the basic colors and patterns available.
"I have analyzed it at Washington University in St. Louis at the Earth and Planetary Sciences Department with RAMAN Spectroscopy and have found it to be a Rhyolite.
It can get a decent polish with some work. I like the typical satin finish it gets though. Have some that you are wanting to get a better polish on? Contact me for tips! I answer all emails personally and quickly."
I have heard this mineral incorrectly named Sonora Dendritic as it is missing the N on Sonoran. DO NOT BE MISLED by purchasing it under this name. While you will be getting the same TYPE material you will undoubtedly be paying too much!
I have plenty of rough, slabs and cabochons including KILLER custom designer cabochons.
Today I see less than 5% premium material, 70% lower grade and 25% average. The rough will be graded and sent out based on quality.
Average to fine rough is currently going for $9.00 to $20.00 per pound
Please contact me for rough, individual cabochons and designer cabochon availability.
Simply put...they sell faster than I am cutting them! I can, however, cut you beautiful shapes to fit your needs as well so do not be shy about asking.

Sonoran Dendritic Rhyolite showing all the colors it has formed in.
Sonoran Dendritic Rhyolite with a very nice dendritic pattern!
This material is from Mexico and is in somewhat limited supply due to the fact that it is being dug by hand and very few people doing the work. The rough is a Rhyolite. I have tested this material with RAMAN Spectroscopy at Washington University in St. Louis where I have consulted with the Earth and Planetary Sciences Department.
I shot these pictures of some of the many varied pieces we have cut. Each one is different. I am also offering slabs and rough of this material.
Don't hesitate to order some cab's, slabs or rough today!
